You will often see both J1939 and CDL codes displayed simultaneously in diagnostic software. Critical: CID 0110 and SPN 110 both relate to coolant temperature, but they are different systems requiring different diagnostic procedures.

Caterpillar engines use staged derates and shutdowns through both fault codes (hardware failures) and event codes (operating condition alerts). Event codes are prefixed with “E”.

Which do you need? For daily shop work on mixed fleets, Jaltest is cost-effective. For deep CAT-specific work — calibrations, parameter programming, and factory-level diagnostics — CAT ET is mandatory.
On older CDL-equipped machines, turn the key to ON and unplug the termination plug from the diagnostic connector. The service lamp will flash the MID and CID in sequence. Note: This method does NOT provide FMI data, limiting diagnostic accuracy. A proper scanner is strongly recommended.
A fault code indicates a hardware failure — a sensor out of range, circuit fault, or actuator not responding. An event code (prefixed “E”) indicates an operating condition exceeded a threshold — like high coolant temp or low oil pressure. Both can trigger derates but are diagnosed differently.
It depends on severity. Informational and low-severity codes may allow continued operation. High-severity codes and event codes (especially oil pressure, coolant temperature, and emissions system codes) require immediate investigation.
